So we list every item in the actual size and the nominal size. We have considered not using Nominal Dimensions, however, we decided it would be more confusing for professionals than it would be helpful for novice consumers. As a consumer, it is important to understand the difference. Actual sizes can vary depending on where the wood is stored and installed due to the expansion and contraction of natural wood. It also addresses the shrinkage and expansion of the boards that is caused by less or more humidity. Simply instead of having to say “let me get three-quarters by three and one-half inches” you can simply say “one by four”. Nominal sizes are simplified ways to reference not actual sizes. For anyone not in the lumber and construction industry, this can be confusing. The advantages of this are that straight bits do not require the same critical depth control needed with a tapered bit.The entire wood industry uses what is known as nominal sizes. Drilling a pilot with a straight drill bit yields excellent results because the shank of the screw is straight through out its entire length. The overall reduced shank diameter results in a deep thread profile offering great holding power. Modern Production Screws - The shank diameter is actually smaller than the major diameter but larger than the minor diameter. Creating this tight fit on traditional wood screws yields maximum holding power. Tapered drill bits are needed with this type of screw as the pilot hole should fit the outside shank diameter of the screw almost perfectly.

Threads on these screws are deeper near the point and begin to shallow as they get closer to the unthreaded shank or screw head. Traditional Wood Screws - The shank diameter on this screw exactly matches the outside dimensions of the threads. The difference between a traditional wood screw and a modern production screw is found in the sizing differences between the diameter of the screw shank and the screw threads. Note that the fractional dimensions are the best approximations of the actual decimal dimensions. Not coincidentally, only 2/3 of the shank is threaded on our 1 in. As the thickness of the lumber increases though, this ratio can be reduced so that only 1/2 of the shank is threaded into the secondary piece. In choosing length, try to have about 2/3 of the screw threaded into the 'secondary' piece, as shown.
